With the rise of digitalization and social media, it is important to educate and train the population about how to consume and distribute information, and it is a task that should start as earlier as primary school, so students when they become citizens, can identify and distinguish facts from opinions and misinformation.
This was the take away from the Virtual Guest Speakers Series second session titled “Media & Information Literacy in Today’s World”, conducted by Dr. Nuurrianti Jalli, from Northern State University, organised by the Mass Communication Department of the Faculty of Business and Communication at INTI International University, late February.
In a very dynamic session where students had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their points of view regarding social media and the need for normal population to be trained on how to consume media, Dr. Jalli emphasized in the need for the government to enhance certain policies regarding media, but more importantly on the role of the society, and those with the necessary knowledge, to spread and share their expertise, to avoid more confusion when it comes to media consumption.
Academicians and Students from INTI International University, INTI International College Subang and other universities in Malaysia expressed their satisfaction about the topic, because it is a trending situation, especially in rural areas, where the access to accurate information is a challenge.
