Out of time is the seventh track from The Weeknd’s long-awaited sequel album “Dawn Fm”, which continues the storyline from his previous album “After Hours” as they are both a part of his new unnamed trilogy.
The Weeknd samples the Japanese musical artist Tomoko Aran’s song Midnight pretender for the song’s instrumental. The blend of The Weeknd’s dark R&B vocals juxtaposed with the upbeat city pop instrumental creates the perfect song to chill out and vibe to. In this song, Abel laments his failed relationship with an unknown woman, regretting his mistreatment of her as seen by the lines like “I’ve been so cold to the ones who loved me, baby I look back now and I realize”.
Although, The Weeknd loved this woman his fame and playboy lifestyle kept interfering with his relationship, and ultimately pushed her into the arms of another man. As a last-ditch attempt to win her over, he decides to open up about all his struggles to her as he sings “The last few months, I’ve been working on me, baby, There’s so much trauma in my life”. The overarching narrative of the song revolves around Abel desperately trying to win back the woman’s affection.
The song fuses elements from R&B, soul, city pop, and hip hop to create a sort of Frankenstein’s monster of different music genres but yet it still sounds beautiful. In the last part of the song, we get a stellar performance from the legendary actor and comedian Jim Carrey.
Similar to other tracks on the album Jim Carrey plays a radio host hosting a radio show that plays whilst The Weeknd is in purgatory waiting to go to heaven. The production, vocals, instrumental, and Jim Carrey’s performance make this song a 10 out of 10 and a must listen to anyone who is a fan of The Weeknd or R&B.
