The morning of 26 June turned out to be wet and soggy, but despite this weather 18 Foundation in Science (CFSI) students from INTI International College Penang showed up in full force to make a piece of Penang better than it was before.
By 7am the rain had eased to a light drizzle and our spirits lifted as the sun rose. IICP CFSI students, accompanied by 3 lecturers Ms. ST Lim, Ms. Ooi SH and Ms. Gurdeep, arrived at Pulau Jerejak Jetty beach section only to be greeted by a beautiful sunrise and started their task of cleaning up garbage strewn on the beach.
The students were divided into three groups where each group was given with a garbage bag and a pair of gloves. Each group work put up a great effort to outperform the others, and there was a healthy spirit of competition among the groups. It wasn’t all work and play though, there was laughter as the students teased each other and just chilled out. One of the students had brought a drone and was showing it off, adding to the excitement.
Finally, after spending 2 hours of picking litter, we were rewarded with a clean white sandy beach as seen in the photos attached below. The lecturers then thanked the students for their participation in the event and the session ended around 9.00 am. A potluck was initially planned but most students preferred to go to Queensbay for breakfast which was a good thing as rain clouds were beginning to gather and it would have been a very wet picnic if we had all stayed.
